Login-gated wholesale pricing

Closed wholesale stores often hide prices from the public. With gating on, a signed-out visitor sees products but no prices and no way to order until they sign in.

Before you start

Gating reads one thing: whether a customer is signed in. So the gate needs only customer accounts turned on under Settings → Customer accounts in your Shopify admin. Without accounts, no visitor can ever get past the gate.

Lifting the gate is not the same as showing wholesale prices. Once a buyer is in, the prices they see come from Shopify, and for a wholesale price to appear the buyer must be a contact on a company location that has a catalog assigned to it. A signed-in customer with no company location behind them sees your retail prices — the gate has lifted, and nothing else has changed. B2B buyers also have to sign in through Shopify's newer customer accounts; legacy customer accounts can't be used for B2B customers or orders.

Turning it on

  1. Open Theme settings → Wholesale.
  2. Turn on Hide prices for guests.

The editor note reads: "Visitors must sign in to see prices and ordering. Recommended for closed wholesale stores."

What a signed-out visitor sees

With gating on and no one signed in, the Price block and the size matrix are each replaced by a link reading Sign in to see pricing, pointing to the account login page. The buy form is not rendered at all — no quantity stepper, no add-to-cart button, and no link in its place. Product cards in collections and search show Sign in for pricing in place of the price. The mobile sticky bar drops its price line and swaps its add-to-cart button for the same sign-in link.

The rest of the page stays visible — images, title, description, and specs. Inside the Buy buttons block the assurance grid still renders, and so does the request-a-quote ghost button if you have set one up — a signed-out visitor can still ask for a quote. Only pricing and ordering are withheld.

What changes after login

Once a customer signs in, the gate lifts. The Price block renders in full: the wholesale price, the volume pricing table, the MSRP and MOQ footer, and the tax note. The table and the footer are each conditional on their own settings and product data — see Product page. Cards show prices again.

Gating keys on whether a customer is logged in, not on which catalog they belong to. A signed-in retail customer sees pricing the same as a wholesale one. Which prices and tiers they see is governed by their assigned Shopify catalog.

How it composes with tiers and the matrix

Gating wraps the whole pricebox. When a signed-out visitor is gated, the volume pricing table is hidden and the size matrix gives way to the sign-in link along with everything else in the block. After login, tiers and the matrix behave normally against the customer's catalog prices.

Note

Gating hides prices in the storefront, not the catalog. A customer who reaches a product URL still can't price or order it while signed out, but treat this as a merchandising choice, not access control. Use Shopify's own customer and B2B account controls if you need to lock the store down.
