Discount codes

Buyers can enter a discount code before they reach checkout. The field sits in the cart drawer footer and again on the cart page, so a code applies while the buyer is still reviewing the order.

Applying a code

1. Type a code into the Discount code field.
2. Select Apply, or press Enter.

A valid code applies to the cart. The totals update in place — no page reload.

Where the code then shows depends on how Shopify allocates it:

• A code that discounts the order gets its own row under the discount field, showing the code's name and the amount it took off. That row carries a remove button, so a buyer can take the code off again.
• A code scoped to specific products or collections allocates at the line level instead. It shows as a small tag on each line it applied to, with the amount off. Those tags have no remove button. To drop that kind of code, the buyer removes it at checkout.

More than one code

Codes stack. Applying a second code keeps the first, subject to whatever combination rules you set on the discounts in your Shopify admin.

When a code doesn't apply

If a code is expired, misspelled, or doesn't match the cart, the field reverts it and shows the message "This code can't be applied to your cart". Nothing is added to the order.

Note

This field is for discount codes. Gift card codes are redeemed at checkout, not here — and per Shopify's rules a gift card can't be used to buy another gift card.

A code applied in the cart carries through to checkout. Buyers can also enter or change codes at checkout as usual.
